Metastatic (also known as Stage 4) breast cancer occurs when cancer cells spread to other parts of the body, which is why receiving a diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer can be such devastating news.
Unlike other diagnoses, this one is characterized by uncertainty, involving ongoing treatment and fear of how the disease will progress. In addition, those affected face challenges on a daily basis.
Daily challenges

Living with metastatic breast cancer often comes with myriad unique challenges. People with the disease often have to balance work, social life and family responsibilities, sometimes with young children. On top of all that, they also have to cope with the emotional toll of their diagnosis.
In addition to the strong emotions it evokes, the diagnosis brings its own set of challenges on a daily basis. These include:
- Fatigue management. Both the disease and its treatment can cause fatigue, which is often persistent, unpredictable, and can have a significant impact on daily life.
- Pain management. Pain can vary in intensity, but when it occurs, it can limit mobility, activities, or quality of life.
For the day-to-day management of these symptoms, palliative care is available as soon as an advanced diagnosis is made. Palliative care is not concerned only with end of life but can play an essential role in improving quality of life.
Indeed, palliative care can help relieve fatigue and pain and lessen feelings of anxiety. For example, complementary approaches such as adapted yoga, meditation, and dietary management can also be added to support medical treatments. We also offer a variety of holistic health and support services at La Maison Rose.
Advances in research
There has been significant progress in research into metastatic breast cancer. Treatments are now tailored to the specific nature of each tumour. At the same time, clinical trials are opening up new horizons, paving the way for innovative treatments and constantly seeking better solutions than those currently available.
