This treatment aims to stop or slow the cancer\u2019s progression. It is often prescribed after surgery and radiation therapy to reduce the risk of recurrence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are different types of hormonal therapy, including the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Anti-estrogens<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tamoxifen (blocks the ER receptor)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fulvestrant (degrades the ER receptor)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Aromatase<\/strong>&nbsp;(the key enzyme in estrogen synthesis)&nbsp;<strong>inhibitors<\/strong>, such as Letrozole, Anastrozole Exemestane (decrease estrogen levels)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone analogues,<\/strong>&nbsp;such as Goserelin, Leuprolide, Buserelin (suppress estrogen production by the ovaries)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Oophorectomy<\/strong>&nbsp;(surgery to remove the ovaries, the major estrogen producers): For pre-menopausal women who no longer wish to bear children<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Hormonal therapy can cause various side effects, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hot flashes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Weight gain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Decreased libido<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Osteoporosis (in the case of aromatase inhibitors)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Constipation, diarrhea or nausea<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduced fertility<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fatigue<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vaginal discharge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Change in cholesterol levels<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hair thinning (in the case of aromatase inhibitors)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Research continues to evaluate the possibility of giving hormonal therapy to women at high risk of breast cancer before cancer develops.
