Breast implants can be inserted behind the gland or behind the muscle as part of cosmetic or reconstructive breast surgery, or as part of gender reassignment surgery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Breast implants <\/span>may<\/span> be filled with sterile salt water or silicone gel, in a<\/span> shell<\/span> that <\/span>may<\/span> have <\/span>either <\/span>a smooth, slightly textured (micro-textured), or highly textured (macro-textured) surface. In Quebec, an estimated <\/span><\/span>145,000 women have breast implants<\/span><\/span>,<\/span> all types combined<\/span>.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what is the impact of these implants on breast health? Here are the answers to the questions most frequently asked by people who have or are considering breast implants. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Does <\/span>having<\/span> breast implants increase my risk of breast cancer?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

No link has been <\/span>found<\/span><\/span> between breast implants and the development of adenocarcinoma, which accounts for 95% of breast cancer cases.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, if you have textured breast implant(s), there is an increased but <\/span>minimal<\/span> risk (between 1\/3,817 and 1\/30,000 according to Health Canada) of developing <\/span><\/span>anaplastic large cell lymphoma<\/span><\/span> (ALCL). ALCL is not breast cancer, but <\/span>rather <\/span>a rare form of cancer affecting the immune system, which can develop next to the implant. <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of 2019, certain models of textured breast implants can no longer be sold or imported into Canada and others have been removed from the Canadian market. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although to date, no link has been made between other types of cancer or other types of implants, the link between the development of any type of cancer and any type of implant is under close surveillance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have had breast cancer<\/span>. A<\/span>m I more likely to <\/span>develop<\/span> this type of lymphoma?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If <\/span>you have textured breast implants<\/span> and <\/span>you have had breast cancer<\/span>, <\/span><\/span>you are no more likely to develop <\/span>ALCL<\/span><\/span> than someone without a history of the disease<\/span>. <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do breast implants affect breast observation? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Contrary to what one might think, <\/span>having<\/span> breast implant<\/span>s<\/span> <\/span>does not interfere with <\/span>breast <\/span>observation<\/span>;<\/span><\/span> it is<\/span> done in the same way as for a person without implants<\/span>.<\/span> T<\/span>he important thing is to know your breast<\/span>s<\/span> in their current state<\/span> in order<\/span> to quickly detect any new<\/span>,<\/span> unusual, and persistent changes.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

ALCL can present signs similar to those caused by breast cancer. It is therefore very important to perform regular breast observation and consult a health professional promptly if unusual changes appear. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0<\/span>Are there any special recommendations for people with breast implants?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In addition to regular breast <\/span>observation<\/span>, Health Canada recommends that people with breast implants <\/span><\/span>have <\/span><\/span>systematic<\/span><\/span> follow-up<\/span>s<\/span><\/span> with a health professional. For example, you can ask a doctor how often you should be <\/span>seen<\/span>,<\/span> given your situation. <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are there any risks <\/span>to<\/span> having a mammogram with breast implants?\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In terms of<\/span> mammography (breast x-rays), there <\/span>is no issue with having<\/span> breast implant<\/span>s<\/span>, <\/span><\/span>but it is important to mention this before the examination is <\/span>done<\/span>.<\/span><\/span> Medical imaging technologists are trained to <\/span>apply<\/span> minim<\/span>al<\/span> compression with the machine to <\/span>avoid rupturing<\/span> the <\/span>implant.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do breast implants interfere with the interpretation of mammogra<\/span>m<\/span> results?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you have implant<\/span>s<\/span>, <\/span><\/span>it may take longer to perform the mammogram<\/span><\/span>, s<\/span>o it is important to mention this when you make your appointment<\/span>.<\/span> To ensure that all the tissues surrounding the implant are exposed<\/span> as much as possible<\/span>,<\/span><\/span> technologists take additional shots <\/span>using<\/span> specific techniques<\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite these techniques, <\/span>there may be areas of the breast that are hidden by the implant <\/span>that will remain difficult <\/span>for<\/span> the radiologist<\/span> to assess<\/span>. I<\/span>f<\/span> part of the breast tissue is not <\/span>visible<\/span>, or in case of doubt, <\/span><\/span>you may be asked to undergo additional tests.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can a mammogram be performed when an implant <\/span>is<\/span> ruptured<\/span>?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you have a ruptured implant, <\/span><\/span>other tests may be offered<\/span><\/span> prior to having the implant removed or replaced<\/span>. <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are there specific screening recommendations for <\/span>people with breast implants<\/span>?\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

People with breast implants can have screening mammograms and <\/span><\/span>participate in the Qu<\/span>\u00e9<\/span>bec Breast Cancer Screening Program (PQDCS)<\/span><\/span>. They should follow <\/span><\/span>the same breast cancer screening recommendations<\/span><\/span> as people without implants.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If <\/span>I am diagnosed with <\/span>breast cancer, will <\/span>having<\/span> breast implants interfere with treatments?\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Having<\/span> breast implant<\/span>s<\/span> <\/span>does not <\/span>interfere<\/span> with<\/span> breast cancer<\/span> treatments<\/span><\/span>. Expansion prostheses (placed during multi-stage reconstruction surgery) and permanent breast implants <\/span><\/span>can be irradiated<\/span><\/span> during radiation treatments.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, if you have breast implant<\/span>s<\/span>, <\/span><\/span>it may be necessary to remove them<\/span><\/span> during surgery or radiation<\/span>. Also, if you are planning <\/span>to have<\/span> reconstruction<\/span> with implants<\/span> and need radiation, you may be advised to have <\/span>surgery immediately or at a later date<\/span>. Your healthcare team will consider <\/span>several<\/span> factors<\/span> in order<\/span> to tell you which procedure is most likely to <\/span>provide the<\/span> best <\/span>results <\/span>and be better tolerated. <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What<\/span> should I do<\/span> if I am thinking about getting breast implants?\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
