While a healthy lifestyle can help keep your immune system functioning properly, no single food, diet or supplement can restore the defences of immunocompromised individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A weakened immune system makes it more difficult to fight infections caused by pathogenic microorganisms, especially those found in food. Vulnerable people therefore need to be extra cautious and adopt good hygiene and sanitation practices to limit the risk of foodborne illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few simple steps to help you choose and handle food safely. If you have any questions or concerns about food and your immune system, ask a member of your healthcare team or a nutritionist for personalized advice tailored to your situation.<\/p>\n<div class=\"gradient-circle-wrapper\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><div class=\"gradient-circle\"><div class=\"circle\"><\/div><div class=\"gradient\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"block-accordions-group theme-block theme-block--innerblock aligndefault\">\n    <span class=\"theme-block__label\">Accordions<\/span>\n  \n    \n<div class=\"block-accordion  theme-block theme-block--innerblock aligndefault\">\n    <span class=\"theme-block__label\">Accordion<\/span>\n    <h4 class=\"block-accordion__title\">Choosing<\/h4>\n    \n\n<p>If you have a weakened immune system, certain foods should be avoided as they\u2019re more likely to be contaminated with potentially harmful microorganisms:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Raw or undercooked meat, fish, seafood, and eggs (sushi, tartare, mousse, etc.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Non-dried processed meats: undercooked hot dogs, baloney, roast beef, turkey breast, refrigerated p\u00e2t\u00e9 and meat spreads, ham sliced at the counter<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Raw vegetable sprouts and shoots (alfalfa, clover, radish) and bean sprouts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Raw beets<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Foods purchased in bulk<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Certain unpasteurized foods: dairy products (milk, cheese), egg whites, honey, fruit juices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s also a good idea to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>check the expiry date on food packaging;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>buy cold or frozen foods last, just before checkout;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>carefully examine fruits and vegetables and avoid those that are damaged; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>monitor <a>Health Canada food recalls<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n                    \n\n\n<div class=\"block-accordion  theme-block theme-block--innerblock aligndefault\">\n    <span class=\"theme-block__label\">Accordion<\/span>\n    <h4 class=\"block-accordion__title\">Washing<\/h4>\n    \n\n<p>Here are some hygiene and sanitation tips to reduce the risk of contamination when handling food:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Wash hands thoroughly (with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds) after:<ul><li>touching high-risk food;<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>going to the washroom; and<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>being in contact with animals, chemicals or sick people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly under running water to remove potential contaminants. If necessary, use a soft brush to clean the hard surfaces of foods such as potatoes or carrots. Perishable foods and leftovers should therefore be refrigerated quickly, and never left at room temperature for more than two hours (or one hour in summer).<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n                    \n\n\n<div class=\"block-accordion  theme-block theme-block--innerblock aligndefault\">\n    <span class=\"theme-block__label\">Accordion<\/span>\n    <h4 class=\"block-accordion__title\">Cleaning<\/h4>\n    \n\n<p>One of the best ways to limit the risk of cross-contamination is to wash the following items regularly in hot, soapy water:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reusable bags, especially those used to transport high-risk foods<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sponges and kitchen cloths, which can be breeding grounds for germs. It\u2019s important to change them every day.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Work surfaces, cutting boards, cookware and kitchen appliances.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n                    \n\n\n<div class=\"block-accordion  theme-block theme-block--innerblock aligndefault\">\n    <span class=\"theme-block__label\">Accordion<\/span>\n    <h4 class=\"block-accordion__title\">Disinfecting<\/h4>\n    \n\n<p>Although thorough cleaning reduces the risk of spreading bacteria, it can still leave a few germs behind.
